10 Minutes With Amy and Caleb From Bridge House.


Ex-Miss South Africa and a young Paralympic swimmer give us some insight into Bridge House’s Mile.

Caleb Swanepoel is Bridge House’s Mile Brand Ambassador.

Caleb Swanepoel lost his leg after a shark attack in 2015.  He is a shark attack survivor, activist, and motivational speaker. He’s got his sights on Tokyo to represent team South Africa 2020 Paralympics.

Q:        How did you get into swimming?
A:         Swimming, I started in the pool just before I lost my leg in 2015 and continued with
            the training as my main form of exercise. Competing was the next step that came in
            the following years.

Q:        How many siblings do you have and where do you fit in the pecking order?
A:         I have four siblings and I am the second eldest of three boys and town girls.

Q:        Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer?
A:         Hunter

Q:        We finish this interview and you step outside the office and find a lottery ticket that
            ends up winning R10 million. What would you do?
A:         First I’ll build a 50-meter pool in my backyard.

Q:        What do you listen to when a) going to work, b) gym or c) relaxing?
A:         Radio b) Lil  Wayne c) Yiruma

Q:        What’s your favorite ’90s jam?
A:         Backstreet Boys – I want it that way

Q:        What was the last gift you gave someone?
A:         A soft toy for swim coach’s new-born.

Q:        What were you like in high school?
A:         The real Wolverine

Q:        What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?
A:         Breaking Bad because it has a great story and fantastic acting.

Q:        What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?
A:         A monkey broke into my house and stole a banana.

Q:        Tell us something we don’t know about you?
A:         I drink about 10 cups of tea a day

Q:        What record do you hold? Or if no record, which one would you like to set?
A:         I might hold a record in the S9 50metre freestyle event but I’m not sure, otherwise I
            would like to hold a record in the 50m freestyle.

Q:        What would your autobiography be called?
A:         “A walk to remember” Saving Private Caleb

Q:        Name one celebrity you would beat at arm-wrestling?
A:         Eben Etzebeth…..haha (nervous laugh)

Q:        What is the most useless talent you have?
A:         I stand on one leg

Q:        If you were a kitchen appliance, which kitchen appliance would you be and why?
A:         A kettle (see the question regarding something you don’t know about me).

Amy Kleinhans-Curd is a South African beauty queen who was Miss South Africa 1992, the first non-white winner in the history of South Africa. She placed fourth runner-up to Miss World as Miss World Africa on 12 December 1992

Q:        How did you get into education and health?
A:         As a qualified teacher and a previous Miss South Africa I have always been well
            aware of the links between education and wellness?  Over the years my work within
            education has made me more aware of the need to educate our community on the
            importance of a healthy life style which directly feeds into one’s ability to do well in
            academics.

Q:        How many siblings do you have and where do you fit in the pecking order?
A:         3 siblings, I am 1 of 4 girls and second eldest

Q:        Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer?
A:         Gatherer

Q:        You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
A:         Yellow, because I am a sunshine person

Q:        We finish this interview and you step outside the office and find a lottery ticket
            that ends up winning R10 million. What would you do?
A:         I would invest the winnings, double its growth and then designate specific family

             members, friend, and charities I would like to spoil with money made from investments. I would never touch the original 10mil.

Q:        What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?
A:         If I am alone in car and going to meeting I play a mental visualising game of the
            meeting and its successful outcome.

Q:        What do you listen to when a) going to work b) gym or c) relaxing?
A:         A) The new, and catching up on all new things on the radio B) Anything on the top 20
            list for weeks or C) Jazz, RNB or classical.

Q:        If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?
A:         I would be a female eagle because I love the freedom of the wings and the symbol
of strength.

Q:        What was the last gift you gave someone?
A:         Was a beautiful flavored candle in a thick glass container.

Q:        What were you like in high school?
A:         Very obedient, athletic and fun.

Q:        What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?
A:         The State of The Nation Address leaders report because I was very interested to hear
            what the present Cyril Ramaphosa will give in his first State Of The Nation Address.

Q:        What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?
A:         I drove out of my driveway and phoned from my car to ask my daughter to look for
            my phone as I forgot it at home.

Q:        What do you want to be when you grow up?
A:         The matriarch of a successful family.

Q:        What inspires you?
A:         Random acts of kindness

Q:        Tell us something we don’t know about you?
A:         I grind my teeth so much that I have to wear returner at night.

Q:        What do you work toward/hobbies in your free time?
A:         I paint, and I do cognitive stimulation piano lessons.

Q:        Describe the color yellow to somebody who is blind.
A:         Stand in the sun and that’s how yellow feels like.

Q:        What record do you hold? Or if no record, which one would you like to set?
A:         I was the first Miss South Africa without any voting rights

Q:        What would your autobiography be called?
A:         Looking back to look forward.

Q:        You’re on death row, what would your last meal be?
A:         Thai food

Q:        Name one celebrity you would beat at arm-wrestling and why?
A:         Bella from Twilight because I think my mind is stronger than hers.

Q:        What are the best and worst purchases you have ever made?
A:         Best purchase must be the trampoline I got for my grandson and the worst is very
            wet biltong.


The 6th Annual Bridge House Mile takes place at the spectacular York Dam at Boschendal Estate, Franschhoek on Saturday, 2nd March 2019. Boasting various distances including 100m and 200m (for the kiddies), 400m, 800m, and the Elite Mile, the 2019 event is set to be the best ever. Bridge House looks forward to welcoming swimmers of all ages and abilities.   A full day of FAMILY fun is planned, with live bands, kids entertainment, food, drinks and lots of great swimming.
