In honour of Women’s Month, the LaMuse Classic women’s longboard surfing event will be held in Muizenberg, Cape Town this August.
LaMuse is a love of the Ocean
The LaMuse Classic is a dynamic event that encourages women of all ages, backgrounds and varying capabilities, who might otherwise feel intimidated to surf in a regular contest, to come together to enjoy and share a common love for the ocean. As the name “LaMuse” suggests, the event promotes the idea that surfing is more than a competitive sport but a ‘source of inspiration’ that encourages surfers to feel connected to the elements to each other. Moreover to embrace the invigorating energy that flows through the ocean into our bodies leaving us feeling balanced physically, mentally and spiritually.
The women behind LaMuse
It is this element of ‘stoke’ that has inspired this fun-filled ladies event. Charmaine Adams, one of the contest organizers, elaborates on the central concept behind LaMuse stating that “We want to introduce competitive women’s’ surfing in a fun, friendly and easy-going environment, involving women in all aspects of the event.”
As such, women are not only being exemplified by the contestants but are being honoured in all the roles necessary to make the event a success, namely the judges, the commentator, contest directors, event organisers and our main sponsors: The Store, Faithful to Nature, and Skoon. All of which are lady-owned companies.
LaMuse loves Mother Earth
As lovers of the ocean and Mother Nature as a whole, we intend on leaving our ‘playground’ in a better state than it was before. This year the LaMuse is a ‘Blue Ocean Event’ which means with the help of Ocean Pledge, we will be partnering with various restaurants along the beachfront that pledge to go single-use plastic-free. Moreover, waste generated will be appropriately managed to ensure that as much as possible is diverted from landfill.
Committing to this, partakers in the event are given incentive to produce less waste, with various offerings and specials supplied by Expression on the Beach, Hang Ten Café and Bootlegger to each contestant provided they bring their own reusable mug. In addition to various waste-free living items such as metal water bottles supplied by Faithful to Nature, and in the goody bags participants receive, will all contain recycled rubbish removal bags so as to encourage them and spectators to take part in the beach clean up initiated by the Beach Co-Operative.
LaMuse strives to not only give back to the environment but to the community as well, by working in collaboration with “The Young Knitters Club of Lavender Hill”, a Non-Profit Organisation that strives to empower underprivileged women with opportunities for education and employment.
Each contestant will receive a hand knitted beanie, by women who are supported by the charitable organisation.
The deets on the LaMuse Classic
The two-day event will be held at Muizenberg on the 11th and 12th of August. In true feminine form, the day will commence at 7:30 am with a yoga session to salute the sun.
There will be a Skoon pamper tent open throughout the day with a range of body products to indulge in and sunscreen will be available from Back to Nature as well as a The Store pop-up shop.
So, whether it’s ladies you love, or love being a lady, be sure to come down to the beach for some fun in the sun.
Entries opened 10th July 2018.
Amanzi Mag will be there and looks forward to frolicking (note – not quite surfing!) in the Atlantic and joining in on the fun!
