For many people, retirement means a lot of things. Slowing down, putting your feet up and perhaps playing bingo or bowls? But for a retired South African couple, it meant loading up everything on their boat and sailing the Atlantic Ocean and into Central Illinois.
Lots of boats sail through the Illinois River but it’s very rare that a boater will come all the way from South Africa.
Retired South African businessman, Nicolas Mace said; “It was something we always wanted to do. you reach these decisions in life, these moments. Unfortunately, my wife got breast cancer and I said, why are we still sitting here? How much is enough?”
For the past year and a half since they left Cape Town, South Africa, they’ve been to Brazil, Bermuda, Florida, Cuba and up through Mobile, Alabama.
They’ve been able to keep family abreast of their travels through his wife’s blogging. He says the sailing trip aboard their boat the Messhuga has been great fun.
Nicolas states the biggest challenge so far has been dealing with turbulent waters in the Mississippi River. He said there don’t have any plans for returning to Cape Town soon. After hurricane season is over they’re heading back south towards the Caribbean Islands…
Remember they’re retired – how nice!
